. He could feel the blood draining from his face… and his brain. His knees felt weak, and he wasn’t sure if he would pass out or puke first, but he was sure both were coming. He’d had a couple of panic attacks before, but that last time he’d felt like this, the same players were on the field.

A split-second before the impact she’d seen the truck speeding toward them. The headlights were off, and her alarm bells were on. She had reached up and hugged her arms around herself as the impact happened around her.

Time slowed for Dirk. He watched the side curtain airbag on the other side of the car neatly unfold as it inflated. Glass from the side windows hung suspended in the air. The driver’s head slammed into the bag, it hardly providing any protection from the grill of the truck clawing its way through the door of the car. He could feel his side of the car lift off the ground from the force of the impact.

“You are not at all what I expected, Jack,” Carissa said as he unloaded the plane in Moab, putting all the luggage and gear into the van Jack had rented. She watched and followed along until they were almost done, then she grabbed the last bag, feeling like she really needed to help.
