Just A Month is the newest project in my queue. I started it less than a month ago, but have put down about 35,000 words. It is the story of a guy that hated where he grew up. Largely it was because of one girl, the girl next door. She had gone scorched earth on him when they were barely teens, and then everything snowballed.
The last couple of stories I’ve written have leaned more toward romance than action. This one stays on that trajectory. I have been wanting to try something like this for a while. Most of the romance plotlines I’ve written have involved people that were in love, but separated. This time, I wanted to have two people with unresolved issues. And they have significant problems.
It is also a little darker than what I’ve previously written, and trying to “get into character” to write some of the scenes has been pretty rough. There are themes with hatred, depression and rage, and those aren’t things that easily come to me. Reading true life stories of people that have been betrayed and abandoned is difficult. Enlightening, but painful.
Every story takes research, but this one is taking more than most. And researching guns or terror tactics is straightforward. Researching emotional responses is not.
That is part of why the story is being written faster. I don’t like being in a dark mood during the construction of a story. To counter that, I want it done. Although, I think I will be setting it aside for a while soon. I need a break and will work on something easier.
If you enjoy my stories, check out my full length novels and story collections on Amazon. You can also subscribe to my blog and get an original novella. You can catch my short stories FREE on Vocal, too. Of course, I always love feedback and could use a few dedicated beta readers… especially if you’ve read published books. And, as always, thank you.
