I did not take a traditional path to get here. Most people start out writing shorter stories, then work their way up to longer pieces. Not including assignments and (non-fiction) blog posts, the first thing I wrote was a novel… actually a pair of them encompassing one story (Planning Vengeance and Dig Two Graves). Then I wrote a novella to give away for blog subscribers (if you subscribe, you still get it for free). After that I started writing short stories on Vocal, aside from the ones I compiled for Who, What, When, Why?.
For my purposes, a short story is under 10,000 words. A novella is over 10k, but under 60k. A novel is over 60k… and I usually shoot for 80k to 100k on my novels.
Mostly I work toward writing novels, but I won’t pad the word count just to hit a goal. Grafton had four stories that I felt were complete, but each was well short of a novel on its own (obviously since the total is under 129k words). So, I use novellas to complete a collection. I also had a novella that I dropped in to complete You Don’t Know Jack, and another that anchors Who, What, When, Why?
On Vocal I tend to write around 2000 words per story, although I have written some multi-part stories.
So, depending on what you read, there are a lot of options. If you want to knock out a quick story, check out Vocal. If you are looking for something to spend a little more time with, check me out on Amazon.
