The next book I have coming out is tentatively called Sniper, and it is the backstory for Warren Chestik, Jack Dixon’s security guy previously seen in Unknown Caller and Second Chance.
Especially after writing him in Second Chance, I knew there was more to his story. Even before I was done with Second Chance, I had started writing notes about his backstory and thought there might be enough for a novella, if not a novel. He is a no-nonsense guy, and he quietly goes about his job. He takes what he does seriously, and likes the people he works for.
In figuring out about him, I already knew he was patient and methodical. I also knew that he was dedicated and determined to do what he felt was right. Finally, he was skilled. Since so many in Jack Dixon’s orbit were former special forces operators, I knew that Chestik having that in his past would make Jack more comfortable with him.
At the same time, I knew that he needed some tragedy and heartbreak. Originally, life was going to take a different path… not the part about him working for the Dixons, he was already there… but the rest of his life. Putting his daughter in as a friend of Ellen Stewart had actually been on of the first things I thought about. I needed a way for her to come to attention of the Dixons.
Trust is very important to Jack Dixon… even more than Amy. Jack needed to have an active role with Warren in order for the two men to trust each other. I didn’t see Warren as being about the money as much as working for Jack because he respected him.
It also helped that they were coming from similar places… both men making the destruction of drug traffickers into something personal.
Often, when I write a book, everything grows out of one scene… that single event spurs along everything before and after. I didn’t really have that going into this one, but there were a couple of things that I wanted in the story… I have often driven through the Smoky Mountain National Park on the way to Michigan… and had to detour more than once. Some of the routes fed to me by phone have seemed sketchy. Finally, I needed Jack to have a secret… that is an upcoming book.
