We are diving deep now. I’m about 50k words into this story and it has been kicking around the computer for nine months or so. Sometimes, I will write a story from beginning to end in a few weeks… other times, not so much. This story centers on Jenny Coolidge. She works for a company that Jack Dixon owns, and is (indirectly) his goto computer security guru. And, she teams up with Dirk Bryce, they can hack anything. Her assistant is a guy named Cory Taylor.
This all started out because of the idea for Jenny’s character came into my head. I just started writing her, and I needed her to have a foil. Cory seemed like the perfect fit. I think he still has a few more surprises in him as well. As does she.
She is kind of a puzzle… and she loves puzzles. In a way, she is the female version of Dirk Bryce/Terry Gates. But she does have a little more of a penchant for violence. Reasonable well controlled, though. She is unconventionally pretty, incredibly smart, socially awkward, and a VERY good shot.
But the story unfolded after I figured out who she needed to be. Everyone else in the story… even Dirk, who is a well established character in the Dixon-Prince books… is secondary to her. And Cory, to a lesser extent. I’m still not sure how everything is going to resolve in the story, and as far as it is from completion, major plot elements could change or disappear.
One thing is sure, though, Jenny and her intelligent resolve will be what saves the day. The bigger question is whether or not Jenny will have personal resolution… and I don’t know yet.
The story is about 60% done, I think. Although, I never really know until the end. Deeper in the manuscript, there is a major upheaval, and that conflict is handled, but it still seems that there is something else… another shoe to drop.
As for Jenny, I love her sincerity, her sarcasm, and her awkwardness. I also love her toughness… toughness she wasn’t fully aware of until it was needed.
There were excerpts on Monday and Wednesday, too. Please check back. And, if you like the writing, check out my novels on Amazon. You can find out Dirk’s origin story in Who, What, When, Why? He is also in several other books. And, if you subscribe to the blog, you can get a FREE ebook.
