This is third story I have in the works. It is also not quite as far along as Undercover (still the working title), or Gunny’s Mission (another working title) that I have posted a few excerpts from. But I have actually been working on this one the longest. This one also focuses in more on Gunny and may be his “last hurrah”. In this one, he has retired and takes on a different challenge. Gunny arrived at school a little after six in the morning. He pulled his Hummer H1 into the employee parking area of the school. He’d been challenged by a couple of students to run with them. The school didn’t have a functional track team… or a functional track. They had what had once been a track and field facility, but it was seriously neglected and overgrown.
Half an hour later, he was dressed in his running gear. Despite it being chilly, he still opted for shorts, but did wear a hooded jacket. He sat at the back door of the school, near the gym entrance, waiting for the four boys and two girls to get there. They ran Cross-Country events under the school’s name but didn’t have anyone on staff that coached them. They were on their own.
